How much should I tip at restaurants in Vancouver?

In Vancouver, like many North American cities, it is customary to add 10-20% on top of the bill when paying. I usually tip at 15% unless the service is exceptionally good or bad.

How can I easily calculate the tip at the restaurant?

If you have a newer cell phone, such as Nokia, Android, or Blackberry, try GeoTip, a free cell-phone tip calculator. In my spare time I wrote this program, and it will work on most phones to calculate the tip. (I used to work at Nokia so it was pretty easy for me to write this program.)

How Does this Site Work?

This site is powered by Open Source technology. It is based on the free WordPress weblog publishing software, and runs on PHP and Linux.

I would encourage anyone who has an interest or passion in some area such as food, music, or photography to create a weblog such as this one. You don’t need to be a computer programmer to create a weblog. Simply by visiting a site such as Blogger or WordPress you can register for a free blog account and start posting right away.

How many visitors does your site get?

As of October 2008, my site is getting around 1000 visitors per day.

How do you make money with this site? Do restaurants provide the food for free?

For all of my reviews on this site, I have paid for the food just like every other customer. I bring my camera into the restaurant and take photos of the food that I have ordered. Usually I go with a friend, and I let my friend begin eating his or her food while I am taking the photos. It only takes about 5 minutes or less to take the photos. To avoid disrupting the restaurant ambiance, I do not ever use a flash, and I only rarely take pictures of anything other than the food. Sometimes I will take a picture of the restaurant’s decor if it is extra special.

I make money on this site through Google Adsense. There are a bunch of text advertisements that run throughout the site. When people click on the ads, I receive a small amount of money per click from the advertisers. Adsense is free to join for webmasters, and it is the reason behind Google’s success.

If you are a webmaster, please find out more information about Google’s Adsense program and start making money with your website. As of October 2008, I was making about $3 to $6 per day on this site, which definitely pays for a few nice meals every month!

What kind of camera do you use?

I use a Canon EOS Rebel T2i camera with a Canon 50mm f/1.4 lens for closeups and a Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens for wider angle shots. I also have the Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM lens, which is a versatile lens with great clarity, provided there is enough light. Many of the older photos on this site were shot with a Canon Digital Rebel XT.

What are your other interests besides food and photography?

I am also an avid jazz pianist (see my band web site) as well as a full time software developer at Business Objects/SAP.

I am also passionate about video editing and film production and you can view some of my films over at Birds In the House Productions.
